About ConvertFLAC
A FLAC to MP3 converter that does the work on your own device.
Who runs this site
ConvertFLAC is built and maintained by one independent developer. It is not a company, and there is no team behind it — just a small tool that someone made because they needed it and thought other people might too. The site is free to use and is kept online with advertising.
The developer is not named here on purpose: this tool does not need to know who you are, so it does not ask you to know who made it either.
What it does
ConvertFLAC turns FLAC audio files into MP3. You drop a file in, you get an MP3 out. That's the whole product. It is built for people who just want a quick conversion without installing software, creating an account, or handing their music to a server they have never heard of.
How it works
Everything runs in your browser:
- Your browser decodes the FLAC file using its built-in Web Audio engine.
- The audio is encoded to MP3 with lamejs, a JavaScript MP3 encoder.
- The finished MP3 is handed back to you as a download.
No part of your audio is uploaded to a server. There is no backend that touches your files.
Why people convert FLAC to MP3
FLAC is a lossless format: it keeps every bit of the original recording. That makes it the right format for archiving a music collection, and it is why national archives and serious listeners prefer it. The trade-off is size. FLAC typically compresses audio to somewhere around half or two-thirds of the uncompressed original, which still leaves files far bigger than most players, phones, and car stereos are worth filling up.
MP3 throws away the parts of the signal most listeners will not notice, and in exchange the file gets much smaller and plays on essentially everything. A three-minute stereo track at CD quality is about 30 MB of raw audio; encoded at 192 kbps MP3 it lands around 4 MB — roughly one seventh the size. Convert when you need portable or widely compatible copies; keep the FLAC as your master.
Why browser-only
- Private. Files never leave your computer.
- No account. Nothing to sign up for, nothing to remember.
- No limits. No file size cap, no daily quota.
- No cost. Free to use.
What it is not
This is a focused tool. It converts FLAC to MP3. It does not edit audio, batch-merge tracks, or convert other formats. If you need those, this is not the right tool — and that's fine.
